Alumni In the News - February 9, 2004 Financial commentator Jonathan Murray '84 applies liberal arts degree |
Jonathan Murray has succeeded in the investment world as senior vice president for Legg Mason Wood Walker Inc. He also shares his expertise with a wide audience on radio and television.
Murray, a 1984 graduate who majored in English, has joined WBAL-TV in Baltimore as a financial commentator. He will share duties with longtime financial commentator Julius Westheimer, appearing Monday and Wednesday mornings at 5:40 and 6:15 a.m.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity to help the Baltimore metro area learn more about the financial world," Murray said.
Murray has been highly visible in Baltimore and national media for some time. He has given financial commentary on WBAL Radio and has also been quoted in publications such as The New York Times, The Baltimore Sun and The Baltimore Business Journal. In addition, Jonathan and his twin brother David have appeared on CNBC and Fox News Network.
Jonathan is currently a trustee of Dickinson College and serves as the Chairman for the Finance Committee there. Prior to joining Legg Mason in 1994, he worked for Kidder, Peabody and Co., the New York Investment Banking firm.
Jonathan credits his Dickinson education as the most important factor contributing to his career. "Whether I was in the classroom, on the baseball field, or on stage, I learned to think, to solve
problems, to lead, and to communicate effectively with people," he said. "Dickinson gave me the confidence to succeed, and to truly believe in myself."
He also noted that Dickinson's liberal arts approach taught him to make connections between interrelated subjects. "You couldn't help learn about art when you studied opera. Literature showed me information about politics. Math and science had deep roots in history and religion. I think you become fully aware of this interrelatedness when you're in the real world, dealing with an ever-changing landscape. As a result, I feel equipped to handle almost anything."
Legg Mason Wood Walker is the securities brokerage subsidiary of Legg Mason, Inc. with more than 1,400 Financial Advisors in over 140 offices, primarily in the eastern and southern United States, and including affiliate institutional offices in San Francisco, Chicago, London, Geneva and Madrid.
