Scientist Receives NIH Award

Chad Mirkin NIH Award Chad A. Mirkin '86 is one of the scientists who are the first recipients of the NIH Director's Pioneer Award. The National Institutes of Health established the program to support individual scientists and thinkers with highly innovative ideas and approaches to contemporary challenges in biomedical research. The Director's Pioneer Award was established in January 2004 to encourage exceptional researchers and thinkers from multiple disciplines to conduct high-risk, high-impact research related to the improvement of human health.

Mirkin is the George B. Rathmann Professor of Chemistry and Director of the Institute for Nanotechnology at Northwestern University. In December 2002, he was profiled in a special issue of Esquire magazine "devoted to introducing a few dozen people who are changing our world. Saving our cities. Unlocking secrets of science and medicine. Creating new industries. Imagining new worlds. Their work will astonish and inspire a new generation."

On May 23, 2004 Chad Mirkin was presented with the honorary degree of Doctor of Arts and Sciences at Dickinson College's commencement.
