Former Professor and Alumnus Named to Posts in U.S. Department of Education

Eugene Hickok

Former Dickinson faculty member Eugene Hickok is expected to be named acting deputy secretary of education by President Bush. Dr. Hickok has served as under secretary of education since July 2001. He was Pennsylvania's secretary of education for six years in the administration of Governor Tom Ridge.

At Dickinson College, Hickok was a political science professor and the founding director of Dickinson's Clarke Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Contemporary Issues.


In addition, Ronald Tomalis '84 is expected to be named acting assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education. He is currently chief of staff to the under secretary's office and plays a key role in policy and management issues affecting elementary and secondary education.


Another Dickinson alumnus, John P. Bailey '95 was appointed Director of Educational Technology in January 2002. He advises Education department officials on educational technology policy. Before joining the U.S. Department of Education, he was Pennsylvania's first director of educational technology under former Governor Tom Ridge.
