Old West Bicentennial - Friday, August 8, 2003

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Old West, a stamp cancellation of an Official First Day Cover was held in Memorial Hall. The envelope includes a portrait of Old West by Perry County artist Sandra Philpott along with a Louisiana Purchase stamp.

The anniversary is actually the date when the cornerstone for the building was laid. Old West did not host its first classes until November 1805 and housed its first undergraduates in 1810. Future U.S. President James Buchanan, class of 1809, was one of the earliest students to study within its walls.

A limited supply of these commemorative envelopes is available for sale by the college bookstore. The cost is $5.00 plus shipping. A commemorative issue of John and Mary's Journal featuring Old West is also available from the bookstore for $15.00 plus shipping. Please contact the store at 1-800-582-5436 to place an order.
