"Mindshare and the Life of the Mind" was written by David L. Kirp, professor of public policy at the University of California at Berkeley. It was adapted from his forthcoming book, Shakespeare, Einstein, and the Bottom Line: The Marketing of Higher Education. The book explores the struggle colleges and universities face in finding the balance between promoting their institutions and remaining true to their principles.
Dickinson is one of the case studies in the book, which looks at schools such as MIT, Columbia, the University of Southern California, NYU, and the University of Chicago. David Kirp has generously given permission for Dickinson to reprint the article here.
