When Dickinson College students engage the world, they don't only do it through one of our top-ranked study abroad programs. As the expression "think globally, act locally" suggests, Dickinson students often apply their useful and engaging education at home on campus and in the local community of Carlisle.
One example of this is the Student Garden, part of the Environmental Studies Department. The garden employs anywhere from three to 10 students, who are responsible for the daily upkeep of the garden from watering to weeding to planning crop rotations and harvest schedules. Located adjacent to sports fields at Dickinson park, the garden provides a place to focus on sustainable food systems and cultivate chemical-free fruits and vegetables.
In 2002, the Environmental Studies Department hired a part-time director for the Student Garden and the program, which now has permanent funding, was underway. In addition to daily gardening work, students are involved with community outreach projects, such as providing food to Project SHARE (a community food bank), field trips to local farms, hosting monthly workshops for the Carlisle community relating to food and food production, selling food stuffs at the downtown Carlisle farmer's market and related semester research projects.
