Oral History Presentation in Cuba
April 4, 2003

Susan Rose, Professor of Sociology and Community Studies, gave a workshop on oral history to the Centro Pablo Torrientes in Havana, Cuba in early April. Her workshop was followed by a radio interview on Habana Radio. The Centro Pablo Torrientes is a major cultural center that supports the work of writers, artists, and musicians. The Director, Victor Casaus is a well known poet, writer, and film director who has established a series of projects and publications on Memory and Testimony. Using literature, film, and music, supporters of the Centro are interested both in community studies and the integration of oral history methodologies.

Rose presented what Dickinson students and faculty have been doing in the area of oral history, video documentary work, and community studies. Of particular interest was Dickinson's Global Mosaic that focuses on a comparative study of trans Atlantic migration to the nearby multi ethnic town of Steelton, Pennsylvania and to Comodoro Rivadavia in Patagonia, Argentina. Interested in the experiences of various immigrant groups (Italian, Bulgarians, Croatians, Spanish) who came to work in the steel mill or oil fields, students have had the opportunity to interview people in both locales about immigration, family life, work experiences, and labor ethnic relations.
