Newly admitted and enrolled students get an in-depth look at life as Dickinsonians

More than 150 students who have been admitted to or are enrolled in the class of 2018 visited Dickinson for Decision Dickinson: Class of 2018 Preview on Thursday. This was an opportunity for students to meet other accepted students and spend the day immersed in the Dickinson community.

The energy was high and the excitement was palpable as the families packed the Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium for opening remarks by Provost and Dean Neil Weissman and a Life at Dickinson session by Brenda Bretz ’95, associate provost for curriculum, and Joyce Bylander, vice president for student development.

“It’s really great to meet all these new people and start forming relationships,” said Jordan Maben ’18. “It was a little scary and overwhelming at first when it hits you that this is what college is going to be like, but then it was a lot of fun.”

The future Dickinsonians converged with current Dickinsonians at the Academic Open House, where they were able to talk with faculty members and current majors in fields ranging from physics to film studies. For some, it was a serious fact-finding mission to determine the requirements in their intended area of study, while for many others it was about exploring all of the opportunities Dickinson offers.

“I don’t know what I want to do, but I know this is something I have a passion for,” said Claire Novak ’18 after introducing herself to the representatives at the creative writing table. “It’s so helpful to hear from the people who will actually be teaching your classes and be able to ask them any question we want.”

After lunch in the Dining Hall and tours of the campus, the families said farewell to new friends and future classmates, all relieved at reaching the next leg of the journey to becoming Dickinsonians.
