Eerie, Familiar, Contemporary

Students perform a recital of works by guest-choreographer Pam Tanowitz

by MaryAlice Bitts-Jackson

There was standing room only at the Cubiculo Theatre Sunday night as students in Dickinson’s Dance Theatre Group (DTG) presented a concert led by Sarah Skaggs, director of dance, and Bessie Award-winning choreographer Pam Tanowitz.

Dubbed a "clear-sighted postmodernist" by The New Yorker, Tamowitz choreographed the concert and worked directly with student dancers during her residency at Dickinson—one of several dance, visual and musical residencies on campus this fall. Her boundary-breaking treatment of classical dance has been described as "eerily familiar, yet entirely contemporary."
