A Distinctive Community

Erik Calvo Fielding ’19

Growing up in Madrid, Eric Calvo Fielding ’19 cultivated a deep love of science and social science. At Dickinson, he’s a chemistry major and community advisor,  helping to mentor first-year students. He’s also involved through the Quidditch team and a student-run organic-coffee cart.

Hometown:

Madrid, Spain.

Major:

Chemistry.

Clubs and organizations:

Residence Life & Housing (R.A., community advisor), Dickinson Quidditch and The Peddler.

Favorite book:

V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd.

Favorite movie:

It really depends on my mood. Currently, Pan’s Labyrinth.

Describe Dickinson in one sentence:

Dickinson is one of the few places a chemist and an artist can meet in a history class and have it not be strange at all.

On choosing Dickinson:

I looked at a lot of different types of schools, from massive state schools to schools like Dickinson, and honestly, touring the campus and seeing how close-knit the students were and how green the campus was (both in terms of plant life and sustainability) was the deciding factor in why I ended up here.

Favorite place on campus:

The Res Life/ SLCE office in the HUB. So many interesting people work and walk by there, so it is always interesting.

Favorite Dining Hall food:

Any of the soups—on the odd occasion that they have bread-bowl day.

Favorite class:

My multivariable calculus class was not my favorite class, but it was definitely a great learning experience. I truly realized that even if you had terrible teachers in a subject before, you can still end up loving the subject with a passionate teacher later on. I only wish I had taken it sooner, as I would have had the time to at least get a minor in math as well. It definitely was not my favorite class, but it was one of the classes I learned the most in.

Biggest influence:

My parents. They have always been extremely supportive and have shown me that you can work through the hardest circumstances and try to come out on top.

As I kid, I wanted to be …

… a forensic anthropologist or a bio anthropologist. I say, “as a kid,” but this was me up through, like, junior year of high school. When I was younger than that, I wanted to sit on the couch and read all day, so not all that much has changed.

If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it would be …

… Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of Iron Maiden—also a commercial airline pilot, brewery owner and avid fencer.

Most important thing I’ve learned so far:

In class you’re never wrong. You’re only ever learning, as something that you learned in an intro class can be completely unraveled by concepts you learn two years later, and neither is necessarily wrong, just applied differently.
