Dickinson College Rising Senior Gains Software Engineering Experience at Blackrock

What I do, day to day:
I am interning as a software engineer at Aladdin Product Group, a division of Blackrock in New York, New York. Aladdin Product Group is the core technology division that develops Aladdin Platform, which is the entire operating platform for Blackrock and investment managers to manage assets. My day-to-day activity usually consists of checking up on emails and first making sure that I have everything prepared for my meetings. As a summer analyst, I have been given a summer long project for which I have to meet weekly deadlines set by my manager. So I usually keep my manager informed daily to make sure that we are in the same boat. My project largely consists of working with the latest technologies and programming in different languages, so it takes up most of my time. However, as an intern with access to Blackrock’s financial platform, I am required to understand the financial markets and intricacies of portfolio management, so I make sure I have enough time every day to learn about them and utilize them as my work requires.

I volunteered at Project Share last summer as a data analyst intern.
Most valuable part of this experience:
Working at a financial tech company like Blackrock, I have been fortunate enough to learn about both technology and the financial industry. Apart from my main project, Blackrock expects me to manage a portfolio, work in a team during hack-a-thons and complete several other secondary tasks. This has taught me to handle multiple responsibilities and projects at the same time.
Advice for students considering internships:
Networking and connecting with people from the industry that you want to work in is very important. Apart from that, building skills that increase your value to a company and being able to show that in a resume or during interviews is key.
How this internship has helped me:
This internship has showed me that working on and solving real-world problems with a deadline is different that working on homework that you can always come back to. I have learned a lot about myself, my career goals and my working habits.
Post-Dickinson plans:
I hope to work in the financial tech industry and work on projects that truly excite me.
