Major: computer science
Hometown: Cerritos, California
Award: 2018 Jeff Ubben Posse Fellowship

What will you be doing through this fellowship?

As a 2018 Jeff Ubben Posse Fellow, I will spend the summer working at Microsoft in Seattle, Washington, mentored by Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. I am looking forward to learning from Mr. Nadella's insights and experiences. I have the amazing opportunity to have a personal interview with Mr. Nadella, during which I will gain a deeper understanding of his outlook on leadership. At Microsoft, I will get hands-on experience in different departments, such as cybersecurity, sales and information technology. The opportunity to participate in Microsoft events, such as volunteering and the annual Hackathon, is particularly exciting for me, given my interest in computer science. Additionally, I will conduct my own research project and present it toward the end of my internship.

How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

The interdisciplinary nature of the Dickinson education has allowed me to find my passion in cyber law and security. Since Dickinson enables me to take classes in different disciplines varying from philosophy to computer science, I am able to pursue the intersections of my discipline that are not normally considered. Through Dickinson, I'm able to merge my passions for computer science and social justice into a feasible career opportunity. Additionally, Dickinson has given me an unparalleled support system through the Posse Foundation, Delta Nu and professors who support me in all my endeavors.

How did you get this opportunity?

The Posse Foundation’s National Board of Directors established the Jeff Ubben Fellows Program in honor of Jeff Ubben’s decade of service as chairman of the board. Mr. Ubben believes that America’s future relies on "developing pathways to leadership positions for talented young people from every background, young people who truly represent the diversity of this country." Each year, Posse selects five sophomores for the fellowship and pairs each one with a major industry leader. To be eligible for the Ubben Fellowship, Posse scholars must have a minimum 3.7 cumulative GPA and demonstrate exceptional leadership capabilities. After submitting an application and going through several interviews, I was notified in February that I was a 2018 Jeff Ubben fellow, which I could not be more excited about!
