How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

I think the faculty at Dickinson have been the biggest influence for me at Dickinson. My science professors have guided me through the medical-school application process and pushed me to do my very best. I have done some great research with two different professors, and I have presented at two different conferences. The connections I made at Dickinson will continue to thrive when I leave for medical school.

  • Internship Experience
  • Morristown Memorial Hospital, surgical intern in Morristown, New Jersey: I shadowed doctors and helped their research department with case studies, got to practice surgical techniques and see a variety of other medical fields such as radiology and cardiology.
  • Research assistant for Professor Tony Pires, summer 2016, spring 2017: Worked in the Friday Harbor Labs in Friday Harbor, Washington. Studied how ocean acidification affects the development of snails. Assisted with his research along with conducting my own project.
  • Summer 2017, worked in [Assistant] Professor Jason Gavenonis's lab, where I started my own organic chemistry project, which I am currently continuing for an honors in biochemistry.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

The most defining moment for me was working over the summer with Professor Gavenonis. He became a friend as much as a mentor, and I think made my Dickinson experience extremely special. I was able to conduct really interesting research and learn what aspects of research I truly liked. I gained a valuable mentor and am thankful for the support he gave me when I was applying for medical schools.
