How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

What Dickinson has given me is the ability to not only analyze information and ask questions, but to also be able to challenge authority. What I mean is that, in order to be a student you have to ask questions and not ask questions like “what does this mean?” or regurgitate a sentence or two from the reading. What I mean is the ability to challenge the language and answer the question of “so what?” What does this information mean and how does it impact the knowledge you already have and the knowledge you are seeking to understand? Dickinson has cultivated my critical thinking skills, and I not only attribute that to my sociology major, but also to the professors who do not let the students slide and challenge them—teaching what is right and what is wrong.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Some of the defining moments here at Dickinson have really occurred during my senior year. I joined Exiled Poetry, spoke at Take Back the Night and grew closer with my track team than I ever thought I would. Those experiences really will define my college experience and legacy here at Dickinson College.

The academics helped me become more aware of my surroundings through class discussions and relationships with peers. My extracurriculars enhanced my leadership abilities, organizational skills and self-confidence.

I interned with a women's professional soccer team, Sky Blue FC, in New Jersey. They play in the National Women's Soccer League, which hosts some of the best players from the United States, Mexico, Canada and more. I was a sales and marketing intern for the summer of 2017.

What are you most anticipating about your future?

I am anticipating that I will connect with more Dickinson alums when trying to find out my career goals.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Working in the Center for Service, Spiritually and Social Justice my senior year and being involved with service trips. Sometimes the most memorable times are not in the classrooms but the connections you make with other people outside of them. Service creates an opportunity to bond with those who originally would not have crossed paths.

Devon Korhammer

Major: sociology, political science
Hometown: Easton, Pennsylvania
Job title: college advisor

Job Responsibilities

I will be a college advisor for two years at a high school in Biglerville, Pennsylvania, that has low higher education matriculation. I am responsible for giving students and their families more information and resources about the higher education process (e.g., testing, FAFSA, scholarship info, college essays and applications) in order to increase higher education matriculation. I will work with students and their families directly as well as visit different kinds of higher-education institutions (four-year colleges, two-year colleges, vocational schools and technical schools) to learn more about these institutions and help students figure out what option is best for them.

How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

Dickinson has prepared me for life after college by offering rigorous and diverse classes, which allowed me to navigate my education how I wanted and develop my interests and expertise. Dickinson also provided great professors and other academic resources. I studied abroad, which allowed me to gain global perspective and get out of my comfort zone and experience new things that make me better equipped to live in the world outside of college.

What are you most anticipating about your future?

I am anticipating using the knowledge and skills I developed and improved upon during my time at Dickinson to be an effective employee and an engaged citizen. I am also anticipating using Dickinson as a resource whenever I need it. It is an institution I want to be a part of my life even after my college education is over.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Studying abroad was probably one of the most defining moments of my Dickinson experience. Global education and global citizenship are two big concepts that Dickson really tries to incorporate. Studying abroad was an educational experience in many ways that often happened outside the classroom. I was exposed to a new landscape, language, culture and political system that really made me leave my comfort zone and see the world through a different lens.
