Employer: Harford Day School
Job title: middle school math teacher & lacrosse coach

Job Responsibilities

I will be teaching sixth and seventh grade algebra 1 and eighth grade geometry in Bel Air, Maryland. I will also be an advisor to sixth- through eighth-grade students in addition to being a lacrosse coach for the girls team in the spring.

How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

In terms of the Department of Educational Studies, they prepared me to write lesson plans, to research and analyze my data, how race influences in and outside the classroom, and the contemporary issues of our education system today.

Internship Experience

I interned with Johns Hopkins CTY summer program in Sandy Springs, Maryland, in 2016 and 2017 as an assistant math teacher and camp counsellor. Through Dickinson, I was able to get an externship with the Upland Country Day School as a shadowing opportunity.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Being a part of a sorority; opportunities to involve myself in the Carlisle community, particularly in the education field; having the Kline as a gym; living in Longsdorff my first year; the Department of Educational Studies, going abroad to Copenhagen DIS program.

Matt Berman

Major: educational studies, archaeology
Hometown: Armonk, New York
Employer: Blue Engine
Job title: Blue Engine teaching apprentice (BETA)

Job Responsibilities

I will be working in a school serving a low-income community, in New York City. Blue Engine teaching apprentices (BETAs) work in teams of three to four, under the instruction of a certified lead teacher, providing individualized instruction to small groups of high-school students in math and English classes. The BETA program is a one-year AmeriCorps teaching fellowship that has shown to be highly successful at getting students to be college-ready in its first few years. After my first year beyond the limestone, I will start a four-year teaching residency with Urban Teachers and the Johns Hopkins School of Education in either Baltimore or Washington, D.C. The residency includes a year serving under the leadership of an experienced teacher, three years of coaching from Urban Teachers staff and Johns Hopkins faculty, while working as a lead teacher, along with an M.S. in educational studies.

How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

I can honestly say that Dickinson has prepared me for a leadership role in the areas that matter the most to me. My four years have taught me that making the change you want to see isn't always easy or rewarding, but it is always worth the fight. My first year I took a class on issues in our education system, and I have been searching for the impact I want to have on our public schools ever since. I have learned the importance of research, integrity and communication in solving problems, and I hope that one day I will be able to teach my students the same.

Internship Experiences

Breakthrough Miami Teaching Fellow, ArchaeoTrasimeno field assistant (Archaeology field program in Umbria, Italy), Greystone Accounting Internship Program.

What was the most impactful academic experience you had at Dickinson?

Being able to perform an independent research project for my educational studies senior seminar is definitely the most impactful academic experience in my four years. By surveying high-school students and speaking with administrators and faculty members, I am gaining skills that I will probably use throughout my career in education. It is also a great way to learn a subject by making a contribution to the field. This experience also has allowed me to learn about the research process and work closely with the professor.
