Substantia Jones

Promoting Body Acceptance Through Photography

by Sara Duane ’20

Substantia Jones, the founder and photographer of a photo-activism campaign about body politics and fat acceptance will give a lecture at Dickinson on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium. It is free and open to the public. The presentation will contain nude photography.

Jones leads The Adipositivity Project. She will discuss her efforts to promote the acceptance of all body types, specifically fat bodies, through her photography. Jones advocates for a visual display of fat individuals to break down what she calls a narrow interpretation of beauty, and her work promotes physical autonomy and body positivity for all body types.

Jones founded The Adipositivity Project in 2007 and is the sole photographer for the project. Her work has appeared in galleries and venues such as the Tate Modern in London; the Steirischer Herbst Arts Festival in Graz, Austria; Lesbiche in Sardinia, Italy; and as a two-month solo exhibition at Te Manawa Museum in New Zealand. She has been featured on CNN and in The New York Times and Glamour Magazine, among many other news outlets. In 2015, Time magazine produced a video profile of Jones and The Adipositivity Project. Jones hopes to produce a book of her photographs in the future.

The event is sponsored by the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and co-sponsored by The Trout Gallery. This program is also a part of Love Your Body Week programming.
