Reaching for the STARS

AASHE Award

Dickinson ranks fifth in nation for sustainability performance

Dickinson recently earned a No. 5 Overall Top Performer ranking among baccalaureate institutions in the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education's (AASHE) “Sustainable Campus Index 2017.” AASHE evaluates the performance of more than 300 colleges and universities using their Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), which covers 17 sustainability impact areas that span academics, campus and community engagement, operations, and planning and administration. Dickinson’s score of 74.2 puts the college in the rare company of institutions that excel in all of these areas, and is just four points shy of the top-ranked college.

“We are proud of this recognition from AASHE of Dickinson as a top sustainability performer,” says Neil Leary, director of the Center for Sustainability Education. “It was earned through years of work of students, faculty and staff to make sustainability part of the academic and co-curricular experience of every Dickinson student, as well as a guiding principle for campus operations and strategic planning.”

The AASHE top-5 ranking adds to a long list of sustainability accolades for Dickinson, which includes a gold rating from AASHE, recognition on Sierra magazine's list of Top 20 Cool Schools and the Princeton Review's Green Honor Roll and annual list of “Top 50 Green Colleges.”
