Rowan Humphries '19, National Institute for Civil Discourse (Washington, D.C.)

Majors:

International studies, political science.

Internship title:

Program associate intern.

How I got this internship:

I got this internship by responding to a listing on a company website or search engine.

What I do, day to day:

I post to social media platforms, conduct research for other staff and work on my personal project, which is researching, designing and conducting podcast interviews about contemporary issues.

Other internships:

I work at the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues on campus during the school year, and hope to pursue an internship next summer in a foreign policy think tank.

Most valuable part of this experience:

The people I meet—whether I'm at a networking event, hanging out with my peers, or talking to people in the office, everyone has a unique passion and path. I can learn something from everyone I meet.

Advice for students considering internships:

Talk to people! Family, professors, alumni, friends. Using your connections, you'll be able to find the right place for you. Networking is not as scary as it seems.

How this internship has helped me:

It gives me a chance to "test drive" different fields and organizations so I can be sure the career I ultimately choose will be right for me.

Post-Dickinson plans:

I hope to either join the foreign service, or study to become a journalist. I want to travel and meet as many people as I can.
