Understanding the Tinseltown-Beijing Connection
Aynne Kokas, author of a new book on Hollywood’s partnerships with China, will visit Dickinson to present the lecture “Hollywood Made in China” on Tuesday, April 18, at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium.
Kokas will explore how Hollywood increasingly seeks to create movies that will access the growing market for entertainment in China. She explains in order to reach this enormous audience, Hollywood must work with Chinese firms to produce movies in compliance with Beijing censors, and China wishes to increase its cultural exports through such joint ventures.
Kokas is an assistant professor of media studies at the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on Sino-U.S. media and technology relations. Kokas has been a visiting fellow at the Shanghai Institute of International Studies and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Her work has appeared in publications including the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and Wired, and she has appeared on the BBC, NPR and CNBC.
The event is sponsored by the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and co-sponsored by the Department of East Asian Studies. It is also a part of the Clarke Forum’s spring 2017 theme, “Media, Technology and Civic Engagement.”
