A Confluence of Worlds: Balinese Paintings From the 1930s

This exhibition, curated by art-history major Emily Rother ’12, examines continuity and style changes in 1930s Balinese paintings, which artists made for colonial patrons and themselves.

Faculty Recital: An Evening With the Music of Gabriel Fauré

Contributing faculty Eun Ae Baik-Kim (piano) presents a selection of vocal and instrumental chamber music by French composer Gabriel Fauré. Works to be performed include the vocal song cycle La Bonne Chanson, op. 61, with Lynn Helding (soprano), and Piano Quartet no. 1 in C Minor, op. 15, with Jennifer Sacher Wiley (violin), Blanka Bednarz (violin) and Cheung Chau (cello).
Body and Soul: A Celebration of the Spirit

2011 marked the 200th anniversaries of the births of Franz Liszt and Gustav Mahler, and the choir of the College of William and Mary will celebrate with a program featuring these great composers' works. The program will be highlighted by Liszt's "Missa Choralis" and a new setting of Walt Whitman's "I Sing the Body Electric" by William & Mary alumnus Simon Sun, commissioned for the choir's spring tour.

Presenting a new group of paintings, Kristopher Benedict draws upon a diverse assortment of cultural references, including Better Homes and Gardens magazine, group yoga classrooms, The Firesign Theatre’s 1969 album "How Can You Be in Two Places at Once When You’re Not Anywhere at All," Earthship Biotecture, Max Ernst, wave-particle duality, Gnostic mysticism and the rabbits of Cumberland County.

Faculty Recital: Daniel Brye With esprit!

Contributing faculty Daniel Brye (viola) and esprit! (Mary Hannigan, flute, and Rebecca Kauffman, harp) present an afternoon of music for viola, flute and harp. The program will include works by Debussy, Bax, Rameau, Lodge, Vieuxtemps and Glazunov.
The Arsonists by Max Frisch

Living in a town overrun with arsonists, the good but naive Gottlieb Biedermann simply wants to live an ordinary life, bother no one and stay clear of issues. But things veer from the ordinary when he and his doltish wife let in a couple of strangers who have spurious credentials and rather crude personalities. When the "guests" suspiciously start filling the attic with petrol drums, Biedermann, attempting to avoid the issue, even helps them wire the fuse. The Arsonists is a witty and dazzling parable about accommodating the very thing that will destroy you.
Faculty Recital: Music and Conversation

Dickinson faculty Blanka Bednarz (violin) and Carnegie Mellon artist lecturer Matthew Bengtson (piano) present a festival of Karol Szymanowski works for solo piano and for violin and piano. The artists will interlace playing with speaking, revealing to the audience a world of romanticism, impressionism, unique sensitivity and vitality, lush color and emotional richness in the music of the greatest figure in Polish music of the first half of the 20th century.
