1999-2002 Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Teams

The women’s track and field teams enjoyed an era of true dominance in the Centennial Conference (CC) from 1999 to 2002, winning four straight titles in both indoor and outdoor track and field. Even more impressive, the Red Devils captured two consecutive triple crowns, adding conference titles in cross country in 2000 and 2001 as well.

Hall of Fame inductee Christine Hufenbecher ’02 played a key role in Dickinson’s dominance on the track, becoming just the fourth athlete in conference history to win an individual championship in the same event all four years of her career. In her senior year, she posted an NCAA automatic-qualifying time in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a CC and school record time of 1:01.99.

The Red Devils combined to earn nine All-CC honors, set five conference marks and break 14 school records during the 2001-02 indoor and outdoor seasons. Hall of Fame inductee Liz

Allen Starks ’02 set school records in the 10,000 meters outdoors with a time of 36:30.09, and she broke the mark in the 5,000 meters indoors with a time of 18:07.90. Starks played a key role in the success of the cross-country program as well, helping lead the Red Devils to the first two of eight straight championships from 2000 to 2007.

Alex Forte ’03 captured four gold medals and was named the Outstanding Female Performer at the 2001 Indoor Conference Championships. She anchored the conference and school record-setting 4x800 relay, joining Callie Bradley ’04, Sage Stefiuk ’02 and Starks to clock a time of 9:45.98. At the 2001 outdoor meet, the Devils added a conference and school record in the 4x800 relay as well. Colleen Stephen ’04 joined Bradley, Forte and and Stefiuk for a time of 9:37.77.

Kristie Siracuse ’01 claimed two gold and two silver medals, while Joy Mapp ’02 brought home three bronze medals to help lead Dickinson to its third outdoor championship. Hufenbecher won her third title in the 400-meter hurdles with a record time of 1:03.28, which she would break at the 2002 championships.

Hufenbecher earned her second title in the 400-meter hurdles with a record mark of 1:03.74 in 2000. Erica Glatt ’03, Siracuse, Hufenbecher and Mapp raced to a conference and school record in the 4x100 relay with a time of 48.96, placing second behind a record-setting performance by Western Maryland College.

Four school records fell, and one was tied at the 2000 indoor championships as the Red Devil women captured their second indoor title. Siracuse crossed the line in 8.61 seconds to break the mark in the 55-meter hurdles to win the title. She joined Glatt, Leah Fryer ’02 and Mapp to break the conference-meet and school records in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:47.64. Mapp added a school mark in the 200 meters (26.44) and tied the record in the high jump with a height of 5’2”.

The 4x800 relay team combined for a time of 9:55.32 to set a conference-meet and school record. Kara Felty ’02, Renee Rowlette ’03 and Becky Arnold ’02 joined Forte to win the conference title.

It all started in 1999 with some outstanding individual performances. Seniors Val Latchford ’99 and Jen Latchford ’99 placed first and second in the shot put at the indoor championship, and each added top-10 finishes in the shot put, discus and javelin events, outdoors.

Siracuse captured school records in the 55-meter hurdles, running an 8.78 in the trials, and in the 4x200 relay with Mapp, Sara Teitelbaum ’01 and Amber Standifer ’02, erasing the previous mark with a time of 1:49.2. Siracuse and Mapp joined Fryer and Ann Maurer ’01 for a school and meet record in the 4x100 relay at the outdoor championships. Siracuse also set a new mark in the 100-meter hurdles, placing second with a time of 15.24.
