Production of Chekhov classic marks milestone for Mermaid Players

by MaryAlice Bitts-Jackson

The Prozorov sisters yearn to go to Moscow. The distance from their village to the city presents a challenge—but so does the bland predictability of their everyday lives.

Playwright Anton Chekhov is universally admired for his rich portraits of everyday people trying to make sense of everyday questions like these. In the Mermaid Players’ production of his masterful The Three Sisters, presented Oct. 28, 29, 31 and Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. in Mathers Theatre (Holland Union Building), we can easily see why.

The production commemorates an important milestone for Dickinson’s theatrical organization, which marks its 70th anniversary this year. To celebrate, the cast and crew and theatre & dance faculty members will welcome Mermaid Players alumni to a pre-show gathering and post-show reception, along with parents of current cast members. The events are part of Dickinson’s 2016 Homecoming & Family Weekend, Oct. 28-30.
