Dickinson Named No. 8 on The Princeton Review’s List of Top 50 Green Colleges

by Craig Layne

The Princeton Review has again recognized Dickinson as one of the most environmentally responsible colleges in the nation, placing it at No. 8 on its list of the Top 50 Green Colleges. The Princeton Review Guide to 361 Green Colleges profiles schools with the most exceptional commitments to sustainability based on their academic offerings and career preparation for students, campus policies, initiatives and activities.

Fellow EcoLeague member institutions Green Mountain College and College of the Atlantic are listed in the guide’s top 10, as well as fellow liberal-arts colleges Middlebury and Lewis & Clark.

The Princeton Review highlighted Dickinson’s deep commitment to sustainability, including numerous recognitions and national awards for incorporating sustainability across campus life and academic programs, implementing a Climate Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve climate neutrality by 2020, and constructing and renovating buildings to meet LEED Gold standards.

Additionally, the guide noted Dickinson’s “silver” rating as a Bicycle Friendly University from the League of American Bicyclists. The college is also a Charter Signatory and member of the Leadership Circle of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).

Dickinson students are a central part of the commitment to sustainability, working with the Center for Sustainability Education, the college’s USDA-certified organic farm and the Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM) in hands-on learning opportunities that advance their knowledge and skills for creating a just and sustainable world.

The Princeton Review chose the schools for the seventh annual edition of its green guide based on data from the company’s 2015-16 survey of hundreds of four-year colleges. The organization also selected Dickinson for its Green Honor Roll. Sierra magazine, the official publication of the Sierra Club, recently named Dickinson one of its “Coolest Schools.”
