Oversized snapshots of 20th-century America

Dickinson’s Trout Gallery will host an opening reception for the exhibition “Colorama: The World’s Largest Photographs.” The reception is Friday, Sept. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m.

“Colorama: The World’s Largest Photographs” features photographs made by the Eastman Kodak Company and displayed from 1950 to 1990 in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal as 18-foot-tall by 60-foot-wide backlit color transparencies. The photographs represent a technological leap in the world of marketing and projected an image of an abundant, prosperous and scientifically advanced America, an image that contrasted sharply with the reality of a society divided along racial and socioeconomic lines.

The exhibition features a selection of photographs made from the more than 500 original transparencies. It is organized by the George Eastman Museum and curated by Alison Nordström. The Trout Gallery hosts “Colorama” through Oct. 15.
