Center of the Action

Emma Caplan,

Emma Caplan ’19, Action Center

Major:

International studies.

Internship title:

Summer programs intern.

How I got this internship:

I wanted to get an internship at an NGO, and I discovered that the Action Center, which is the public space of Mercy Corps, was looking for an intern. I knew that it could be a perfect fit for my first internship experience.

What I do, day to day:

During the first part of my internship, I was running the registration and other preparations for Mercy Corps’ summer programming in the Action Center. During the second part of my internship, I have been helping to run both an arts/activism camp for middle-schoolers and an international development camp for high-schoolers.

Most valuable part of this experience:

Having the opportunity to experience what it’s like to work not only for an INGO (international nongovernmental organization) but also work at a world headquarters. I have met people who are doing amazing work in communities all around the globe.

Advice for students considering internships:

I would tell any of my peers to take the leap and do an internship. It might seem intimidating or scary, but the rewards far outweigh anything that you might think is stopping you.

How this internship has helped me:

It has reinvigorated my drive to complete my degree in international studies and work toward a better world. It’s also given me more confidence in myself.
