Pinpointing the Answers
Jaclyn Baum ’18
Student-athlete Jaclyn Baum ’18 loves to zero in on the answer to a problem. Here, she talks about the need to balance work and fun, Ellen DeGeneres, the gift her mother gave her and the little things that made her choose Dickinson.
Major:
Mathematics (chemistry minor).
Clubs and organizations:
Women’s tennis, Kappa Alpha Theta, Alpha Lambda Delta and Tritons.
Honors/scholarships/awards:
Benjamin Rush Scholarship and Dean’s List.
Favorite book:
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Favorite movie:
The Notebook.
On choosing a major:
Math always has a distinct answer or a way to solve a problem. I like knowing that there is always a way to find a solution to the problem.
As a kid, I wanted to be …
… a fashion model, but my genes never made me tall enough for that to be a possibility.
On choosing Dickinson:
After every tour and information session, all the schools mesh together. It was the little things that made Dickinson stand out for me. For example, the opportunity to play collegiate tennis and the knowledge that if I wanted to join a sorority I could and if I did not, it was not going to make or break my social career. I also liked knowing that I would be able to form close relationships with my professors and dean.
Favorite place on campus:
Rector Science Complex.
Favorite Dining Hall food:
Mac ‘n cheese.
Most important thing I’ve learned (so far):
That academics are just as important as the social aspect of college. I feel it is very important to have a balance between doing schoolwork and hanging out with friends.

Biggest influence:
