Dance as a Universal Language

The Clarke Forum’s Movement Matters Film Series explores hip-hop in the slums and ghettos of the world

Dickinson will host a screening of Shake the Dust, a documentary about the uplifting role of break dancing in poverty-stricken communities around the world. The event will be held Monday, March 7, at 7 p.m. in the Mathers Theatre in the Holland Union Building.

Shake the Dust is directed by filmmaker and journalist Adam Sjöberg and executive produced by renowned rapper Nas, or Nashir Jones. The documentary depicts dance as a universal language and tells the inspirational stories of break-dancers from diverse backgrounds. Sjöberg became fascinated with the widespread influence of break dancing through YouTube. From there, he began a globe-spanning exploration of hip-hop in the slums and ghettos of the world.

The film screening is part of the Movement Matters Film Series. It is sponsored by the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and co-sponsored by Department of Theatre & Dance and the Department of American Studies.
