Actor and educator RJ Mitte to speak at Dickinson

Actor and educator RJ Mitte, who played Walt Jr. on the Emmy Award-winning television drama Breaking Bad, will give a talk at Dickinson titled, “Overcoming Adversity: Turning Disadvantage to an Advantage,” on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Like his television character, Mitte has cerebral palsy. He will talk openly about his experiences living with the condition and how he has overcome obstacles to reach his goals as an actor and educator.

Beyond his acting, Mitte is involved with several organizations that raise awareness of equality and diversity. He is the youth spokesperson for the National Disability Institute’s Real Economic Impact tour, which works to improve the financial situation of low-income people with disabilities. He also is the spokesperson for I AM PWD, which stands for Inclusion in the Arts & Media of People with Disabilities. In 2011, Mitte became a celebrity youth ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy. Currently, he is working with the Parent Advocacy Coalition for Educational Rights (PACERS) National Bullying Prevention Center on a nationwide campaign against bullying.

The event is organized and sponsored by MOB and cosponsored by LGBTQ Services, the Office of Disability Services and the Center for Service, Spirituality and Social Justice.
