The award-winning film, A Separation, kicks off a new film series sponsored by the Middle East studies program.

The Middle East studies program is sponsoring a film series at the Carlisle Theatre, featuring critically acclaimed works from Iran, Israel, Palestine and Morocco. It kicks off on Thursday, Oct. 29, with the drama, A Separation. All showings will begin at 7 p.m. and are free with a student ID ($3 general admission).

Here’s a preview:

Thursday, Oct. 29 – A Separation (PG-13, 123 min., drama): A married couple is faced with a difficult decision: to improve the life of their child by moving to another country, or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimer’s disease.

Tuesday, Nov. 10 – The Band’s Visit (PG-13, 87 min., comedy, drama): A band consisting of members of the Egyptian police force heads to Israel to play at the inaugural ceremony of an Arab arts center, only to find themselves lost in the wrong town.

Thursday, Nov. 19 – Omar (96 min., drama, thriller): A young Palestinian agrees to work as an informant after he is tricked into an admission of guilt-by-association in the wake of an Israeli soldier’s killing.

Tuesday, Dec. 1 – The Secret of the Grain (unrated, 151 min., drama): At the port of Sete, Mr. Slimani, a tired 60-year-old, drags himself through a shipyard job that has become difficult to cope with as the years go by. He wants to escape from it all and set up his own restaurant, even if it seems like an unreachable dream.
