Fall open house series opens with strong attendance and fitting questions

by Nick Bailey '16

On Saturday, Sept. 19, 72 prospective students and their families visited campus for the first in a series of Discover Dickinson fall open houses. Families traveled to Carlisle from as far away as Kansas City, Mo., and as close as Hanover, Pa.

A palpable sense of energy filled the Anita Tuvin Schlechter auditorium as Vice President for Enrollment, Marketing & Communications Stefanie Niles welcomed students and their families to Dickinson with a challenge. She recalled that not too long ago, she was in their shoes, on the outside looking in and examining all that the Dickinson community had to offer.

“I asked myself some tough questions,” she said. “For example, 'How would I benefit from this community?' I encourage you to ask questions that will help you decide if [Dickinson] is indeed the right fit for you.”

Throughout the day, prospective students mingled and learned from current Dickinsonians on campus tours, at lunch in the Dining Hall and during student and faculty panels. All three academic divisions—arts and humanities, social sciences and natural sciences—were represented in panel discussions moderated by faculty members. Associate Professor of Biology Scott Boback opened the natural sciences panel, noting that the close-knit community and the engagement of students in the classroom and in the laboratory ultimately guided his decision to choose Dickinson.

The program also included a market stand from Dickinson's College Farm, a student panel on campus life and leadership and an optional tour highlighting the college’s sustainability initiatives.
