Hundreds of students, faculty and staff gathered in the HUB Social Hall to mourn the death and share memories of first-year student Jigme Nidup on Sunday evening. Nidup died while swimming in the Conodoguinet Creek this weekend. The death appears to have been an accidental drowning.

"Jigme was known as a soft-spoken and considerate young man—always eager to share," President Nancy A. Roseman said in an e-mail to the community Sunday afternoon. "He found great happiness in the small things in life and in meeting new people."

During the gathering, students, faculty and staff spoke about Nidup, who was remembered as an outgoing, kind and friendly individual with a good sense of humor. Earlier Sunday, the Social Hall, the Interfaith Chapel and the Wellness Center were open so that students could gather to support one another.

This was the first of several opportunities for the campus community to come together to honor Nidup's memory. Details for a formal college memorial service will be shared when more information is available.
