Volunteer Spotlight: Nick Smith '08

When did you begin volunteering for Dickinson?
I began to volunteer for Dickinson my junior year when I served as a regional recruitment intern for the Office of Admissions. The opportunity enabled me to interact with potential Dickinsonians promoting the values of a liberal arts education as well as sharing our college’s mission and rich history both on-campus and throughout the country.

What prompted you to want to get more involved with Dickinson?
After four years at an institution that has given so much to me, both in terms of education and a greater sense of community, it never crossed my mind that my extensive on-campus involvement wouldn’t translate into that same passion for Dickinson as an alumnus.

List the volunteer opportunities you participate in:
Since graduating in 2008, I served on the planning committee for Dickinson’s Philadelphia Alumni Club and currently serve as the co-chair for Dickinson’s Washington, DC Alumni Club. I am a class agent and serve on the Class of 2008’s reunion committee in addition to being active in DAVS and have been newly elected to the Alumni Council.

What do you enjoy most about your volunteer experience?
What I enjoy most about my volunteer experience with Dickinson is the ability to engage the full spectrum of the Dickinson community - from prospective students to those celebrating their 50th reunion. The most truly rewarding part is hearing the stories of eager students wanting to hit the ground running, to those years removed reflecting on their college experiences and how it made them who they are today.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about volunteering?
I would strongly encourage someone thinking about volunteering to take that next step. There are an enormous amount of opportunities when volunteering for Dickinson, and you can make your own: from engaging prospective students to re-engaging former classmates.

What have you learned about yourself through volunteering?
No matter how many years removed from graduation or distance from Carlisle, the Dickinson bond is further reaching than I could ever imagined while a student.

Why do you choose to give to Dickinson?
I choose to give to ensure that the next generation of Dickinsonians have the same opportunities, both scholastically and in student life, that I had during my time at Dickinson. It is a continued investment on a school that has proven itself time and time again to produce success for its students and alumni network alike.
