Volunteer Spotlight: Kirsten Nixa Sabia ’92

Kristen Nixa Sabia
When did you begin volunteering for Dickinson?
I began volunteering my sophomore year through the phone-a-thon. I took that to the next level by working in the Development Office as a summer Dana intern and throughout my senior year - both for beer money and as a resume-builder.

What prompted you to want to get more involved with Dickinson?
I have always considered Dickinson to be a big part of my character development, so being able to give back to the college, be it financially or with my time, is really an honor.

List the volunteer opportunities you participate in:
Since my years on campus,  I have helped out with the 5th/10th reunions but really got involved this past year preparing for our 20th. Being a part of the alumni committee, I managed our Facebook page, coordinated onsite activities and compiled the slideshow. I was also proud to order Dominos at 12:30am for the many classmates who were still up!  Recently, have taken over the reins of being a Class Correspondent. That will be a much easier task in the 21st century with email, texting and Facebook! In addition to the above, I have worked with several fellow classmates to organize Delta Nu reunions over the years.

What do you enjoy most about your volunteer experience?
Talking to old friends and picking up where we last started so easily. The bond that Dickinson creates as a small, liberal arts community is life lasting.

A fun Dickinson fact about yourself:
I was the goalkeeper for three years on the Women's Soccer team and while studying in Bologna, played on a professional team.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about volunteering?
That it is worth the effort. You get to make new friends with old acquaintances.

Why do you choose to give to Dickinson (financially)?
My Dickinson experience was positively life changing. I'd like others to have that opportunity.
