Whether he’s composing music, drawing, learning a new language or studying the intricacies of the human body, Saudi Arabia native Mansoor Ghoto 15 works ardently to accomplish his goals. With plans to attend medical school in the Caribbean next fall, the biochemistry & molecular biology major discusses his excitement at coming to the United States and the incredible experience of hearing one of his compositions performed by professional musicians.

Major:

Biochemistry & molecular biology.

Clubs and organizations:

Muslim Students Association.

Honors/scholarships/awards:

Dean’s List.

On choosing a major:

I like learning about how the human body functions at a molecular level and about other daily biological and chemical reactions, like the metabolism. I selected biochemistry because it gives me the best of both worlds and will help me in medical school.

Favorite class:

In 2014 I took Music Theory with Professor of Music Jennifer Blyth and Techniques of Composition with Professor of Music Robert Pound. As part of these courses, we wrote musical compositions, which were then played by string-quartet groups visiting Dickinson. I’d wanted to hear my own composition played by other musicians, and that [class made] my wish came true.

Post-Dickinson plans:

I am going to Ross University School of Medicine [in the Caribbean] in September. After that, I hope to establish my life and career in the United States.

Little-known hobby:

I am a music composer. I [also] like to draw landscapes and still lifes. I also can speak five languages (Sindhi, Urdu, English, French and Arabic).

Proudest accomplishment (so far):

There have been two significant days in my life so far: the day I was accepted to Dickinson, because it meant I would visit the United States for the first time, and the day I got into medical school.

Biggest influences:

My parents, because of their incredible support and love.
