The second lecture in the new series was “Faith and Domestic Violence,” featuring Susan Rose, ‘77 professor of sociology and director of the Community Studies Center.

What do political violence, environmentalism, LGBTQ issues, terrorism and domestic violence have in common? Besides often being issues that spark heated debate, at Dickinson the common thread is that each will be examined, parsed and discussed in the new monthly Faith Lecture Series, spearheaded by Donna Hughes, director of the Office of Community Service & Religious Life.

“The idea is to provide a space not just for students but also for faculty and staff where they can talk about religion and other major contemporary concerns and issues,” says Saadia Ahmad, a current Office of Religious Life intern who manages the series. “We want to see how various issues relate to religion and talk about misconceptions that exist.”

The series began last fall with November’s “Faith and LGBT Identity,” which featured Louie Marven, executive director of the LGBT Center of Central Pennsylvania, and December’s “Faith and Domestic Violence,” featuring Susan Rose ’77, Charles A. Dana Professor of Sociology and director of the Community Studies Center.

Interfaith dialogue is at the heart of the Faith Lecture Series, and discussions have thus far explored Christian, Jewish and Muslim perspectives.

On Jan. 28, the 2015 program kicks off with “Faith and Racism,” featuring Crystal Moten, assistant professor of history.

The position of director of community service and religious life is supported by the United Methodist Church.
