Men's basketball team rises to No. 5 in the nation

The Dickinson men's basketball team set a program milestone, earning a No. 5 ranking in this week's D3hoops.com National Poll.

The Red Devils rose from No. 10 following an 80-73 win over then No. 16 ranked North Central College (Ill.). Dickinson defeated Juniata College as well to capture the Doc Greene Tournament title over the weekend.

D3hoops.com Preseason First-Team All-American senior forward Gerry Wixted earned tournament MVP honors with two outstanding performances. He tallied 11 points and handed out five assists in the win over North Central. Wixted led the Devils to the championship with a game-high 24 points, hitting 10 of 11 from the line and dishing out three assists. He hit 17 of 20 free throws for the tournament. Wixted ranks fourth in the Centennial Conference (CC) in scoring (16.4 points per game) and third in rebounding at 7.8 per game.

Classmate Steve Collins shot the lights out to join Wixted on the All-Tournament team. The 6'10' center hit a remarkable 76.9 percent of his shots from the field, including an impressive 5-of-7 showing from three-point land. Collins netted 10 points in the first half of each game of the tournament and leads the CC in three-point field-goal percentage. He ranks second in regular field-goal percentage (64.1), behind teammate Brandon Angradi (64.3 percent).

The Red Devils (8-1, 3-1 CC) return to action on Monday night, traveling to Albright College for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
