Massachusetts native Talene Bush ’17 once dreamed of becoming the next Mia Hamm. She's since moved onto a different career path, but her pivotal role on Dickinson’s varsity women’s-lacrosse team keeps that passion for sports burning bright. Learn more about Talene's athletic aspirations, as well as her fascination with economics and why she thinks forming strong connections with professors is vital to undergraduate success.

Major:

Economics

Clubs and organizations:

Women’s Varsity Lacrosse, Relay for Life and Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Honors and awards:

Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

On choosing a major:

I took a class in microeconomics by chance—the biology class I’d originally signed up for was filled—and I absolutely fell in love with the subject. Economics is something that can be applied to all aspects of life. I love learning about things that are relevant to my everyday life.

Favorite book:

Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne.

Favorite movie:

The Blind Side.

Favorite place on campus:

Adirondack chairs on Morgan Field.

Favorite Dining Hall food:

Grilled cheese and tomato soup.

The most important thing I’ve learned so far:

The importance of strong relationships. Before I came here I didn’t realize how important it is to build strong relationships with my professors. I decided to go to office hours a few times a week, and I learned so much from my professors. Getting to know my professors also helped me tremendously when I got sick and had to leave campus for a while during my freshman year. All of my professors were very understanding.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be …

… a professional soccer player. Mia Hamm was my idol. Even as a little girl in elementary school, I was very determined to keep working [at my sport]. I now play lacrosse, and I am still driven to succeed. Sports are my outlet.

My biggest influence:

My older sister has been one of the biggest influences on my life. I look up to her and learn from her mistakes. Through her example, she has taught me to become independent and responsible.
