Sound and kinetic energy converge in interdisciplinary concert

Live music and kinetic energy converge in “Vox, Velocity and Vectors,” an interdisciplinary event with scientific, philosophical and mythical undertones, opening Friday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m.
Presented by the theatre & dance and music departments in conjunction with the Dance Theatre Group (DTG), the concert features choreography by New York-based Christopher Williams and Director of Dance Sarah Skaggs, among other noted choreographers, a draw that's in keeping with past fall concerts at Dickinson. Unlike those in the past, however, "Vox" also includes musical performances by the College Choir, DICE and Relâche, a Philadelphia-based contemporary-music ensemble that marks its third Dickinson residency—and first DTG collaboration—this fall.
Concert highlights include a “dance murder mystery,” set in an elegant soiree; a joyful declaration backdropped by the 1957 classic film The Red Balloon; a selection from a science-fiction opera by Meredith Monk, augmented by alien costumes; texts by late-20th-century autistic poet Chrisopher Knowles; a dance interpretation of the I Ching; and music by contemporary composers Philip Glass, Joseph Koykkar, Pauline Oliveros and Caleb Burhans. Costume design is led by Associate Professor of Theatre Sherry Harper-McCombs.
“Vox, Velocity and Vectors” runs Friday, Nov. 21, and Saturday, Nov. 22, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m. in Mathers Theatre (Holland Union Building). Tickets are $7, or $5 for advance purchase with student ID.
