• Student Employee and Supervisor of the Year Nominations

  In an effort to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our student workers as well as their supervisors, we are pleased to announce the 6th annual Dickinson College Student Employee of the Year award, and the 2nd annual Dickinson College Supervisor of the Year award. If you have an outstanding student working in your department, or if you are employed by an outstanding supervisor, this is your chance to express your appreciation. All Dickinson College student employees are eligible to be nominated as the Student Employee of the Year; and professional staff level supervisors are eligible to be nominated as the Supervisor of the Year. Nomination materials are available to download from the student employment Web site. All nominees and award recipients will be celebrated in a joint Student Employee and Supervisor of the Year award ceremony on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at noon on Britton Plaza. • Sustainability Grant Deadlines

  The Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education invites proposals for Summer 2010 Environmental Education Fund (EEF) grants. EEF grants are intended for projects which strengthen or create educational opportunities in sustainability education and engaged citizenship across the curriculum. Proposals are encouraged from all three divisions of the college; more than $17,000 in funding was awarded in 2008-09.
  
  Faculty and teaching staff may apply for three types of grants: Curriculum Development (new courses, activities, and modules), Professional Development (conference attendance, training), and Student-Faculty Research Projects. Social justice, science-based, creative, and trans-disciplinary projects related to sustainability, and projects utilizing campus and community resources, are particularly encouraged.

  Presented by Diane Bowers on Tuesdays beginning on Feb. 16 through April 13 from noon-1 p.m. in Memorial Hall of Old West. Qigong (also known as chi gong), a 3,000-year-old discipline from China, is still recognized as one of the most powerful methods of self healing known today. By directing and enhancing your life force energy, Qigong can help you achieve vibrant health and balance of body, mind, and spirit. Many physical illnesses, such as chronic pain, headaches, depression and high blood pressure, can be significantly improved by practicing Qigong. Simple to learn and elegant to practice, Qigong is a system of gentle movements, postures and breathing that promotes flexibility and increases strength without stressing the joints. Qigong is appropriate for all ages and all levels of fitness. The fee for this program is $40. • Osteoporosis/Bone Density Screening

  Screening offered through Prevention Health Screenings on Tuesday, Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in HUB side rooms 201-202. Low bone mass is a serious health problem in the United States. It affects approximately 28 million people over the age of 45, resulting in more than 1.5 million fractures each year. Eighty percent of people affected by osteoporosis are women. Osteoporosis is usually referred to as a “silent disease,” and it is often difficult to diagnose, because the first warning sign of the disease may be a broken bone. Fortunately, this disease is treatable and preventable through early detection. The five-minute bone density screening uses safe, “state-of-the-art” equipment to measure the heel bone for low bone density. This test involves placing your heel in our bone densitometer which will determine your risk for bone loss. This test is very accurate and is FDA-approved for men, too. Preparation for screening – removal of your socks and shoes. Immediate results provided for you to take with you from the screening. You will receive a T-score, an indicator recognized by the World Health Organization, that you can take to your physician. This health screening is free to employees. • Fostering a Non-Discriminatory Work Environment

  Facilitated by Steve Riccio, Director of Staff Development on Wednesday, Feb. 17 (support staff) and Thursday, Feb. 18 (faculty/administrators/supervisors) in the Stern Center, room 102. The support staff session is scheduled from 2-3 p.m. on Feb. 17. The faculty and administrators session is from 9-10:30 a.m. on Feb. 18. Beyond sexual harassment, there are other issues associated with workplace harassment based on race, color, disability, age, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation or any other legally protected traits. This workshop will help participants to identify potentially problematic behaviors, and it will include practical ways to address and prevent forms of harassment as well. • Family Life: Playful Approaches to Managing Stress

  The Cumberland County Conservation District supports agricultural and environmental education students residing in Cumberland County, Pa. Three $500 scholarships are being offered for the 2010-11 academic year to students who meet the following criteria: Cumberland County high school graduate; junior or senior grade level; and majoring in agriculture, environmental resource management, conservation, forestry, or other related fields.

• Vocal Health: Tips for Talking

  Presented by Lynn Helding on Tuesday, Feb. 23, in the Stern Center, room 102 from Noon-1 p.m. For an estimated 10 million workers in the U.S., their voice is their primary tool of trade. Occupational voice users (teachers, receptionists, recruiters, counselors and coaches) find it challenging or even impossible to do their jobs when they become vocally disabled. Law enforcement and air traffic control professionals may compromise public safety when suffering even a single bout of laryngitis. Researchers at the National Center for Voice and Speech (NCVS) in Denver, CO are conducting the first NIH-supported studies on occupational voice disorders based on the underlying hypothesis is that there is a limited vibration “dose” that vocal fold tissues can withstand. During this session attendees will receive information on the most common voice disorders, their causes and prevention.
