Shop 'til you Drop, Carlisle Style

Save on time and gas—but not style—with local gifts

December 4, 2007

Holiday shoppers have a range of choices in downtown Carlisle.
Holiday shoppers have a range of choices in downtown Carlisle.

The continued growth of business offerings in downtown Carlisle has been helped by the High I initiative, through which Dickinson and other community partners are working to make the downtown an even more attractive place to live, work, play and shop. As you plan your gift giving this holiday season, consider going downtown to check out the unique boutiques and shops for presents to fit every taste and budget.

Cherished favorites such as the Whistlestop Bookshop, the ClothesVine, Fly Away Home, Nancy Stamm's Galleria, The Garden Gallery (check out their selection of Dickinson memorabilia) and M. Rutland Gemologist on South Pitt St., are finding themselves with new neighbors this season; exciting places like the Carlisle Central Farmer's Market, with its edible gifts and libations, or Colucci & Company, where all that glitters is gold, and silver and glass … (take your ID and get 10 percent off until Dec. 24), L. Weibley & Friends and the Fan-Zone have greatly expanded the offerings for those looking to keep it local when it comes to shopping.

For the friend who has everything, try the unusual ornaments at Antiques on Hanover, or stroll over to Pomfret Street where the always eclectic Pat Craig Studios and Y-Not Gift Shop offer fun and funky gifts for those hard-to-buy-for people. If you are all about being green and saving green, drop by Pomfret Street Books for a Green-Devil-approved present of pre-owned books—and be sure to bring in your old books to trade. If your guy or gal pal likes to spin a yarn or two, or sew, there is the Yarn Garden and The Fabric Center.

Can't decide? How about a gift certificate for a class or workshop at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center or Lulu's, perfect for the budding or accomplished artist. Each store also has a gift section offering one-of-a-kind arts and crafts.

When you're ready to refuel there is a plethora of culinary and caffeinated delights with everything from baked goods to tea, and Indian to Italian. Some of the new or coming-soon spots include The Good Life Café (soup bar and organic café), Javid's (Indian restaurant and hookah lounge), Issei Noodles, Little Richard's and Cafe Paradise. Can't get enough of your favorites? Head over to Casa Mani, Courthouse Common, Amy's Thai, Back Door Cafe, California Café, Matty's Kitchen, Mt. Fuji or Camellia's Sin Tea Parlor, where you can also find distinctive gifts.

Shopping locally never goes out of style and is an investment in the Carlisle community, so show your support this holiday season and year-round.
