Roomana Syed from India, who was at Dickinson this summer as part of the South Asian Undergraduate Student Leaders Institute, taps out a beat during "An American Musical Heritage: Jazz with Central Jazz Service" in July. She was one of 71 visitors from 41 countries on campus this summer as part of four U.S. State Department programs.

The men and women were on campus for a program of rigorous academics teamed with a hands-on experience of American life, such as the night of jazz. "The scholars and student leaders coming to Dickinson have an unparalleled opportunity to learn about and discuss values, issues and institutions that have played important roles throughout the history of the United States," said Brian Whalen, associate dean and executive director of global education.
