Hundreds of students, faculty, staff and members of the Dickinson community gathered on the lawn between Bosler Hall and Old West Wednesday for Charter Day 2013. The third-annual event marked the 230th anniversary of the signing of Dickinson's charter, which was enacted on Sept. 9, 1783, a week after the American Revolution was brought to an end with the Treaty of Paris.
The event featured a picnic with a vast array of grilled food, salads and a vegan station, and Leo's ice cream rounded off the meal with flavors ranging from almond delight to salted caramel. Sponsored by the Our Dickinson committee and Dining Services, the event offered nearly as much history as food, as easels holding large photos from the college's past were arranged throughout the lawn.
Celebrating the signing of the charter itself, Charter Day also reminds attendees that Dickinson was the first college chartered in the newly formed United States.
Our Dickinson is an initiative led by the Office of Leadership & Campus Engagement and the Office of Alumni & Parent Engagement to foster pride and school spirit among current students.
