The Global Experience: Yaounde, Cameroon
by Emily Haas '13
When I first arrived in Cameroon, the sounds, the smells and the
people were so foreign and new to me. Little kids walked around
with buckets on their heads, the smell of spices from the markets
permeated my nostrils and the hustle and bustle of the city of
Yaounde made me feel like I would never fit in. As with any
adjustment, Yaounde slowly started to feel like home. Those foreign
smells and people became part of my life there. All the things
that were once new and scary to me became normal. Whether it was
sitting with my host mom as she peeled oranges in our den or
engaged with the locals making personal connections, Cameroon is
now my home.
