Nick Karwoski ’10 earned All-American status Saturday by placing eighth in the 5,000-meter race at the NCAA Division III national indoor track and field championship at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.

Senior Nick Karwoski  earned All-American honors Saturday with a thrilling come-from-behind sprint to finish eighth in the 5,000-meter race in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Division III National Championship at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.

The top eight runners at nationals are All-Americans. Karwoski entered the race seeded 11th in the 12-man field. He finished in 14:56.36, edging Ricky Flynn of Lynchburg College, who placed ninth in 14:56.47. Kyle Brady of North Central College won in 14:47.97.

It was a very tactical race, said coach Don Nichter. All 12 runners were tightly bunched at two miles. Nick had the misfortune of having someone clip him from behind and he had a near fall that resulted in him falling off the pace of the main group. In the last 300 meters he had a late sprint to move in front of two runners and gain the last All-American position.

Karwoski  is the second Red Devil in as many years to earn All-American status in indoor track and field for the men's team, and is the first runner to achieve the feat.  Stephen Hendrix ’09 advanced to nationals in the pole vault last year, placing second.

Karwoski, of Hollis, N.H., was the first athlete from the men’s indoor team to advance to nationals in the 5,000-meter race since 1998, when Lowell Ladd ’98 competed in the event.
