Polar Bear Plunge

February’s snowstorms may be history, but the winter fun continued on March 6. The sunny, 53-degree Saturday offered perfect conditions for the 2010 Polar Bear Plunge.

Sponsored by Delta Sigma Phi, the Keystones and Phoenix, the fundraiser calls adventurous Dickinson students to stand waist-deep in a wintry lake for a minimum of 30 seconds.

Held at nearby Pine Grove Furnace State Park’s Laurel Lake, the event raised more than $500 to benefit Special Olympics. Despite the seasonably mild temperatures, the lake remained appropriately icy. According to Delta Sigma Phi President John Jones IV '11, who helped break the ice on the lake's surface with shovels and rakes prior to the event, all participants observed the safety guidelines and did not stay in the water longer than three minutes. “Most people lasted around a minute,” added Ashley Forman ’10, president of Phoenix.
