Michael Fried

August 15, 2012

michael fried

A pioneer in formalist art criticism, critic/historian Michael Fried has made his mark on the art world as an impassioned supporter of the stance that one must critique art on its own terms, rather than as an "event," or as a part of a historical or cultural movement. He has written extensively about post-WWII painting and sculpture and about the transformation of Italian painting ca. 1600.

Fried also is a professor at Johns Hopkins University, a poet and literary critic, and is currently writing a book on Madame Bovary.
