How useful is a Dickinson education? Just ask our students and alums.
Dickinsonians regularly earn prestigious grants and scholarships, conduct research, work around the world and enter esteemed graduate programs. And, at a time of economic uncertainty, our seniors and alums are securing desirable positions on Wall Street, Main Street and beyond. They’re entering the growing fields of environmental science, finance, education, the arts, international business, peace advocacy and more.
Here are just a few of the accomplished Dickinsonians who have secured exciting positions.
Chelsea Allen '11
Chelsea Allen '11Chelsea Allen ’11, a psychology and women’s & gender studies double major, has accepted a position with City Year Boston. As a corps member, Allen will serve as a mentor, tutor and role model for the youth in Boston's public school system where she will work both inside and outside the classroom. While working with kids outside the classroom, she will help to develop service projects to aid the Boston community. “Working with City Year is a great opportunity to develop leadership skills, team skills and work with kids,” said Allen.
Ross Anstaett '11
Ross Anstaett '11Ross Anstaett ’11, an international business & management major from Winnetka, Ill., has accepted a position as a commercial banking analyst at Harris Bank in Chicago. As an analyst, Anstaett will be working with Midwest-based corporate clients with up to $500 million in revenue. After interning last summer in corporate & investment banking at BNP Paribas, Anstaett decided to pursue a career in banking. Harris Bank, founded in 1882, is owned by The Bank of Montreal.
Cara Applestein '11
Cara Applestein '11Cara Applestein ’11, an environmental science major from North Bethesda, Md., has been accepted into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a summer internship as a seasonal ranger/forester. In the fall, Applestein will attend the University of Montana where she will pursue a graduate degree in international conservation and development.
Nichole Brennan '11
Nichole Brennan '11Nichole Brennan ’11, an Italian studies major from Worcester, Mass., has accepted a position as an English teaching assistant with the Network of Autonomous Schools of the Lombardy Region’s Study and Intercultural Training and Experience (SITE) program in Italy for the 2011-2012 academic year. The SITE program is a paid internship and cultural-exchange program offering students and recent graduates an opportunity to work as teaching assistants in a secondary school in Lombardy—a vibrant commercial region in northern Italy—for a partial or full academic year. Participants are selected by members of the Lombardy network in collaboration with the consulate general of Italy and the Italian department at Dickinson. Before she departs, Brennan will continue working with the Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minn. Concordia Language Villages is the premiere language and cultural immersion program in the United States. Brennan would like to thank the Italian department for being so supportive during her years at Dickinson.
Chelsea Cannon '11
Chelsea Cannon '11Chelsea Cannon ’11, a sociology major from Charlevoix, Mich., has accepted a marketing coordinator position with Victor International, on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. Victor International is an upscale residential, resort and commercial real-estate developer dedicated to providing the highest quality living and working environments. Victor International has developed world-class communities throughout Michigan and the British Virgin Islands.
Airlia Choyce ’11
Airlia Choyce '11Airia Choyce ’11, a double major in sociology and Spanish, has been accepted by Teach for America to teach Spanish to students in grades 6-12 in Philadelphia for two years.
“I want to make the privilege of college education, like the one I received, accessible and achievable for all students regardless of their socioeconomic position,” said Choyce, a Blue Bell, Pa., resident who plans to pursue a graduate degree in sociology. “Now that I’ve been accepted, I’m a little apprehensive, and a little overwhelmed, but mostly really excited for the experience.”

Catherine David '11Catherine David ’11, an international studies major from Lower Gwynedd, Pa., has accepted a position with The Advisory Board Company in Washington, D.C. as a marketing associate. The Advisory Board Company is the leading provider of comprehensive performance improvement services to the health care and education sectors.
Tyler Derreth '11
Tyler Derreth '11Tyler Derreth ’11, an English major from Hanover, Pa., has accepted a position with Teach for America in Baltimore, Md. Corp members commit to teach for two years in one of Teach for America’s 39 low-income urban and rural communities across the country. Derreth is one of 10 Dickinsonians from the Class of 2011 so far selected by Teach for America.

Shlomo Elinsky '11Shlomo Elinsky ’11, an economics major from Bethesda, Md., has accepted a sales support specialist position with Lincoln Financial Group in its Group Protection division, which offers group life, optional life, disability and dental products to smaller businesses.
Juan Carlos Flores ’11
Juan Carlos Flores ’11Juan Carlos Flores ’11, the Student Senate president, has been accepted by Teach for America to teach grades 4-6 in Houston for two years.
“Inequality largely originates from a lack of access to resources, most critically education,” said Flores, a Los Angeles resident who is double majoring in law & policy and political science with a minor in Italian. “I know through my personal experiences how many hardships students face in a public education system in which they’re just a number, where there is little investment in their future.”
Flores, who plans to pursue a graduate degree, said studying at Dickinson helped him recognize even more of the disparities that exist between someone attending an elite private school in the suburbs and someone attending a failing public school in a major city.
“The fact that such a gap exists—and the fact that it is so easily identified and thus solvable—motivates me to teach,” Flores said. “I’m excited to get to work and be part of the change on the micro level. I know I will be making a difference in the lives of my students simply by approaching this work as it is—a matter of social justice—and thus with the greatest sense of urgency.”

Ashley Flynn '11Ashley Flynn ’11, a psychology major from New Albany, Ohio, has accepted a position to teach secondary mathematics with Teach for America in Baltimore, Md. Corp members commit to teach for two years in one of Teach for America’s 39 low-income urban and rural communities across the country. Flynn is one of 10 Dickinsonians from the Class of 2011 so far selected by Teach for America.
Claire Fox '11
Claire Fox '11Claire Fox ’11, an environmental studies and international studies double major from Westfield, N.J., has accepted a post-graduate internship with the Dickinson College Farm.
Michael Gerson '11
Michael Gerson '11Michael Gerson ’11, a psychology major from Waban, Mass., has accepted a position as a real estate agent with Venture Real Estate in Boston, Mass. The Venture Real Estate Group, Inc. opened its doors in 2003 and has since become an industry leader through its use of state-of-the-art technology and real-time listing updates for their clients. Venture has grown exponentially each year, setting the benchmark for the practice of real estate citywide.
Allyson Glazier '11
Allyson Glazier '11Allyson Glazier ’11, an English major from Thornton, Pa., has been accepted at the University of Pittsburgh where she will pursue a degree in library and information science with a concentration in archives preservation and management. She also will participate in the Pitt Partners Program, working at the University of Pittsburgh Archives Service Center.
Allyson will spend the summer as a program assistant at the Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy in Poultney, Vt., a month-long intensive foreign language academy/camp for high-school age students.
Kelly Heuser '11
Kelly Heuser '11Kelly Heuser ’11, an international studies and Russian double major, from North Granby, Conn., has been accepted at the Western New England College School of Law. Heuser received a full tuition scholarship, the Oliver Wendell Holmes Scholarship, to attend. This summer she will intern with the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office.
Nina Ioannidou '11
Nina Ioannidou '11Nina Ioannidou ’11, an international studies and Russian double major from Serres, Greece, has accepted an internship with the Public Information Unit of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Nicosia, Cyprus. She will be contributing to the organization in a variety of way to foster public awareness of refugee issues, including researching refugee related topics and drafting briefing notes; conducting daily press reviews; translating press releases, briefing notes and news stories from Web sites and documents; and assisting with fundraising initiatives.

Robert Jansen '11Robert Jansen ’11, a geology major from New Canaan, Conn., has accepted a position as a geology technician with Bill Barrett Corp. in Denver, Colo.
John Jones IV '11
John Jones IV '11John Jones IV ’11, a computer science major from Pottsville, Pa., has accepted a position as a Web developer with Adfero Group in Washington, D.C. Adfero Group is a pioneering public relations firm that integrates sophisticated digital strategies with traditional communications to help corporations, associations and government entities communicate effectively in today’s constantly evolving media environment.

Elizabeth Kosta '11Elizabeth Kosta ’11, an economics major from Mystic, Conn., has accepted an investment performance associate position with Cambridge Associates in Arlington, Va. Cambridge Associates is a privately held independent consulting firm that provides consulting and investment oversight services to more than 900 clients worldwide. Kosta will be working in the Performance Reporting Division, specifically with non-marketable alternative assets.

Xiaoqi (Chelsea) Li '11Xiaoqi (Chelsea) Li, a mathematics major from Shanghai, China, has accepted a position as a application management services associate with Deloitte Consulting LLP, in Camp Hill, Pa. She strongly recommends mock interviews as a way for other students to prepare for case interviews.

Geoffrey (Bart) Marchant '11 Geoffrey (Bart) Marchant ’11, an international business & management major from Lakeville, Conn., has accepted a position as an analyst with Goldman Sachs in New York, N.Y. He will be working for the Fundamental Equity team in the Investment Management division of Goldman Sachs. He previously interned at the Bank of New York Mellon Corporation and Greenwich Associates.

enterprise and limited government.
George Minnick '11
George Minnick '11George Minnick ’11, a computer science major from Harleysville, Pa., has accepted a position as a software developer with the Vanguard Group in Philadelphia.
Vanguard is one of the world’s largest investment management companies, managing more than $1.6 trillion in U.S. mutual fund assets. It offers more than 170 index and actively managed funds to U.S. investors and more than 60 additional funds in non-U.S. markets.
Daniel Myers '11
Daniel Myers '11Daniel Myers ’11, an environmental studies major from Crozet, Va., has accepted a position as special assistant to the environmental advisor for former Vice President Al Gore, in Nashville, Tenn. He will be surveying new science and fact checking Gore’s presentation materials to ensure the most current information possible is provided. Myers also will assist with media for the release of the former vice president’s new book.

Ursala Neuwirth '11Ursala Neuwirth ’11, a Spanish major from Colgate, Wis., has been selected to serve as a City Year Boston corps member. City Year corps members serve as full-time tutors and mentors, run after-school programs, lead and develop youth leadership programs and vacation camps to make a difference in the lives of children and their communities. City Year is a proud member of the AmeriCorps national service network that offers Americans of all ages the opportunity to devote a year to community-based service in areas of education, health and human needs, public safety, disaster preparedness and the environment.

Ashley Peel '11Ashley Peel ’11, a sociology major from Bronx, N.Y., has accepted a position as a Capital Teaching Residency Kindergarten Teacher with the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) in Washington, D.C. KIPP is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools with a track record of preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. There are currently 99 KIPP schools in 20 states and the District of Columbia serving more than 26,000 students.
Taylor Putnam '11
Taylor Putnam '11Taylor Putnam ’11, a psychology major from McLean, Va., will spend the summer as an educational volunteer for Heifer International in Perryville, Ark. Heifer International is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to help end world hunger and poverty through self-reliance and sustainability. Gifts of livestock improve family nutrition, generate income and serve as "living loans." In exchange for their gift of livestock and training, families agree to give one of their animal's offspring to another family in need. While volunteering at the Heifer Ranch, she will help educate high school and college groups about the organization, global poverty issues and sustainable agriculture. Putnam, who may stay on at the ranch into the fall, learned about the opportunity on the organization’s Web site after making a donation.

Matthew Schmiemann '11Matthew Schmiemann ’11, an international business and management major from Millville, Pa., has accepted a position with KPMG LLP, in New York City. He will work in an associate advisory position in forensic accounting.

Ryan Sellinger '11Ryan Sellinger ’11, a political science major from Morristown, N.J., has accepted a Foreign Relations Policy internship with U.S. Senator Robert Menendez. After his internship, Sellinger plans to attend law school.
Alana Shein '11
Alana Shein '11Alana Shein ’11, a neuroscience major from Rockville, Md., has been accepted into the Peace Corps where she will serve as an education volunteer in sub-Saharan Africa. Education volunteers introduce innovative teaching methodologies, encourage critical thinking in the classroom and integrate issues like health education and environmental awareness into English, math, science and other subjects. The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960 and then Senator John F. Kennedy. Since that time, 200,000+ Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 139 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation.

Alexander Shirley '11Alexander Shirley ’11, an economics and international business & management double major from Wellesley, Mass., has accepted a position as a business analyst with The Cambridge Group in Chicago. Shirley interned at growth strategy consulting firm for 10 weeks during the summer, and then received a job offer upon completion of the internship. During that time, he was placed on a real client project with the responsibilities of a full-time business analyst. In addition, Shirley was encouraged to provide input into strategy discussions and ultimately helped to shape strategy recommendations.

Elizabeth Sick '11Elizabeth Sick ’11, a sociology major from Lebanon, N.J., has accepted a position as a human resources analyst with Verizon Wireless at their corporate headquarters in Basking Ridge, N.J. Verizon Wireless operates the nation's fastest, most advanced 4G network and largest, most reliable 3G network. The company serves 104 million total wireless connections, including more than 88 million retail customers with 85,000 employees nationwide.

Christine Speare '11Christine Speare ’11, a dance and music double major from Wilton, Conn., has accepted a position as a design assistant with Polo Ralph Lauren in New York, N.Y. As a design assistant, she will be working with the Childrenswear team on Girls design. Speare interned with the Women's Collection and Black Label teams over summer and winter breaks, and worked backstage during New York Fashion Week in September 2010 and February 2011.

Marlee Walters '11Marlee Walters’ 11, a theatre arts and English double major from Lititz, Pa., has accepted a directing intern position with the 13
th Street Repertory Company in New York City, where she will be directing independent productions of new plays. The 13th Street Repertory Company, founded in 1972 by Artistic Director Edith O'Hara, is a place for actors, directors, playwrights and technicians to develop their craft in a professional environment.

Rachel Warzala ’11Rachel Warzala ’11, a double major in political science and English, has been accepted by Teach for America to teach English at a school in the Newark, N.J, region, for two years.
“It is a two-year commitment, but many teachers stay on in the schools in which they are placed, and I’m definitely interested in that opportunity,” said Warzala, a Somerset, N.J., resident whose goals include working as a TFA charter school administrator. “I interned with TFA last summer at its summer training institute. To fight such an important issue as the achievement gap is an incredibly important responsibility. After seeing first-hand the commitment and dedication of the corps members and the real and lasting impact they were having in the classroom, I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. There are really very few opportunities for students out of college to make such a marked, lasting change on individual peoples' lives.”

Amanda Wernicke ’11Amanda Wernicke ’11, an international studies major from Asheville, N.C., has accepted a position as a research associate in the higher education division of The Advisory Board Co. in Washington, D.C.
Stephen Williams ’11,
Stephen Williams ’11,Stephen Williams ’11, vice president of the Student Senate, has been accepted by Teach for America to teach secondary-school mathematics in Philadelphia for two years. He also plans to attend law school.
“I have a passion regarding education policy and really seek to understand what things are like at the forefront of this battle,” said Williams, a political science major from Mechanicsburg, Pa. “Although I understand that the hardships I will encounter will be great, I’m eager to enter into a place where I know every ounce of effort gets a student closer to attaining a higher level of education and breaking out of the cycle.”

Caitlin Yaeger ’11Caitlin Yaeger ’11, a double major in political science and policy management, has been accepted by Teach for America to teach secondary-school mathematics in Memphis, Tenn.
“I haven’t decided if I will stay involved with teaching and/or Teach for America after my commitment is up,” said Yaeger, of Allentown, N.J. “After I finish my commitment, I am interested in pursuing a graduate degree in public policy or educational administration. My time teaching will help me decide if I want to stay in the schools and work as an administrator or work in education policy trying to bring reform to the overall system.”
Yeager, chair of the Public Affairs Symposium, said she applied to TFA “because of the great work the corps members do. My mother is a retired career teacher and I am well aware of the importance of education. I was fortunate enough to receive a great education at the elementary, secondary, and college levels and I want to help students receive that same quality of education. Teach for America will also help me realize my career goal of working in education policy.”

Merin Yu ’11Merin Yu ’11, an international studies and economics major from Athens, Ga., has accepted an economic consulting position at Economists Incorporated in Washington, D.C.
