I can remember three professors who stand out in my memory way back in the class of
1961.
They are Prof. “Herbie” Wing for his devotion to the history of classical
times and for showing me that it’s OK to have a messy office. John Pflaum taught
[the history of] World Wars I and II. He read my final-exam answers to the class and
this gave me tremendous confidence! Last but not least is Winthrop Difford of geology.
He got me so interested in the subject that I spent 11 years of my life working in the
geology library of the University of Rochester. There I published papers on paleontology
and seismology of western New York, on the Finger Lakes and on Lake Baikal. These three
teachers were my gems, but I never had a bad experience at Dickinson.
