After hearing about Dickinson from a friend who already was attending the college, Rohan Sen ’08 did some research and discovered that Dickinson was a perfect match for him. He left his home in India to make a new home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Many international students wonder, Why Dickinson? How is Dickinson different? According to Sen, “Seeing the international and global focus the campus has, [Dickinson] has always been my first choice.” That is just one of the reasons he decided to apply Early Decision. Another was the academic options Dickinson offered. The international business & management and economics double major knew he would be challenged, both through the classes required in his majors and by the multiplicity of options provided at a liberal-arts college. While applying to Dickinson, Sen had several questions about the different forms and options. “The international admissions office was a great help to me. I remember e-mailing them hundreds of questions and getting a reply for each and every one of them,” he recalls. “Something that makes Dickinson different is its personalized approach to students.”

Sen suspected that Dickinson was the perfect American college for him. Once he arrived, he found the international education and atmosphere he was seeking, and it helped him to “reinvent [himself] in this completely different environment.” An active learning environment such as Dickinson’s was ideal for Sen. His favorite thing about Dickinson College is “meeting with different kinds of people every day and engaging in an exchange of ideas every single time,” he says. “It helps me learn a lot about people in general.” Whether he’s in class, at a social event or just walking across campus, Sen is taking advantage of every aspect of this global community. He is active with Dickinson Desis, the Indian Student Association, and was an admissions tour guide during summer ’05. “Now I am in the ‘Take Dickinson Home’ program, where I am going to promote Dickinson by visiting schools in my country,” he says. According to Giulia Rinaldis ’97, assistant director of international admissions, Sen is “excited to return home with some of our other enthusiastic students and participate in seminars at the United States Educational Foundation in India and … share his Dickinson and U.S. college experience.” The global ideals of the college certainly have rubbed off on Sen just as they have on international students before him. “Dickinson College believes in ‘engaging the world,’ and so far it has done just that,” he says. |
