What I learned my freshman year:
  • To adjust to a new culture, make new friends who do not know anything about my culture
  • To catch connecting flights
  • To make my own bed, do my own laundry, do my own shopping, packing my bags
  • To trust myself and back myself to the fullest, knowing that I have what it takes
  • To have an open mind to anything and anybody, never to judge anybody on first impression
  • To work really hard and achieve the exact goals you have set for yourself
  • To set lofty goals in the first place and believe you can achieve them
  • To work really hard but to have fun at the same time; Life is too short not to have fun every waking second!

On Academics:

Last year was so much fun and full of new and rich experiences. Dickinson's professors are absolutely great and I got the grades that I did by merely being attentive in class. I am enjoying every second of the Dickinson experience. The professors are really masters of their fields and very down to earth at the same time…they inspire you to be the best at what you do; they challenge you to find your own roads, and if you cannot find them, make them for yourself.

On Friends:

It's hard to believe my freshman year is already over. The friends I have made have been unbelievable…they have helped me out in so many ways that I can't thank them enough. I went to Maryland with one of them and enjoyed my first ever Thanksgiving Dinner at the house of their local priest...they made me feel so welcome. Another friend from Baltimore is picking me up this August from the DC airport and I will camp at his house before driving back together for a new year of school. American friends have picked me up from the airport, let me stay at their place, and drove me to college- I don’t even know what I would do without them. I have tried to help them out in my own humble ways…and it’s a great feeling knowing that you are willing to stand up for your friends and that they would do the same in return.

I have made best friends out of people who I thought were not my type…a Pennsylvania state-wrestling champ, a Burmese tennis player. I never knew one could make great friends with girls without forming some kind of a relationship. Some of my very best friends in Dickinson are girls…I sincerely thank them for being there for me and supporting me through good times and bad.

I had always thought if I worked hard, used my brains, and kept my focus, I would be really successful...and that is all there is to life, at least at this stage of one’s life. Dickinson has made me realize the importance of making friends, friends who will come to your wedding, friends who will be there for you for the rest of your life.

On being a Dickinson International Student Volunteer and giving back:

Some new Indian blood is coming to Dickinson this year...and all of these Dickinsonians from my city (Calcutta) have been in touch with me. They have all come visited me, asking me 100’s of questions, and I have really enjoyed playing the role of the big brother. In fact, we are all going to return by the same flight back to Dickinson. I get around 10 phone calls a day from all of the above but I really enjoy answering their never ending flurry of questions, and it takes me back to when I was in their shoes and I remember how much the Dickinson International Admissions Office had helped me (since I didn't have any big brother to counsel me!). I don't thank you enough for all that you guys have done for me, so I am taking this opportunity to do so!

Last Wednesday, I was invited to speak at the American Center in Calcutta to address outgoing students about life and academics in the US. It was kind of imposing...because my fellow panelists were Consulate officials, US embassy reps, a former Johns Hopkins admissions officer and the regional director of the American center. But I think I did a reasonably good job. It was great to see the nameplate in front of me, "Tamoghna Ghosh, Dickinson College". It made me feel that even when I am 7000 miles away from Dickinson, I am connected in someway. It was also fantastic to see some of our new students amongst the crowd. We are already getting to be good friends.

In Summary...

Good friends, good people, sharp Profs and an extraordinary education that Dickinson offers has made it special for me. I truly feel Dickinson is my second home and it’s a bitter sweet feeling when I leave campus to make the 7000 mile journey back home to India. When I leave home and return to Dickinson, it’s the same feeling. I am sad to leave home, but I am happy that I am going back to my second home.

Last year really has been a blast and I have the International students' office to thank for every bit of it. Thanks for making it possible for me. I made the right choice when I came to Dickinson and I am thankful for it!
